<image:caption>Professional Career Doug May was President and Chief Executive Officer of RVI. Previously, he was President of CNA Risk Management, the large commercial account arm of Chicago-based CNA which wrote more than $1 billion in premiums. Doug joined CNA in 1994 and held several specialty group leadership roles. During more than 30 years in the insurance industry, he held positions with AIG in various domestic and international P & C operations, and at the Home Insurance Company. He graduated from Syracuse University School of Management with a B.S. in Finance and Accounting. Obituary Douglas Heller May January 18, 1956 – October 22, 2021 in Flower Hill, NY. Beloved husband of Anne (Gaynor) for 34 years. Adoring father of Elizabeth Ryan (Andrew). Future grandfather of a baby boy due this Spring. Pre-deceased by proud parents Helen (Payn) and George W. May II and best big brother George W. III. Loving brother of Derrice and Marshall (Tina). Proud uncle of John, Nicholas and Cristiana. Cherished cousin of the Payn, Congdon and Caldwell families. Doug’s facility with numbers, calm management style and inspired leadership yielded a long career in the insurance industry. He held senior management positions at AIG, CNA and The Home Insurance Company, retiring as CEO of RVI Group in Stamford, CT. Born and raised in Plainfield, NJ, Doug graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall and Syracuse University. An expert skier and accomplished sailor, he often steered us down foggy mountains and through howling squalls with confidence, skill and infectious enthusiasm. Doug never shied away from a competitive game of cards, backgammon or pool, often besting all comers in the friendliest way possible. Doug was a long standing member of The Creek Club and a past President of The Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club. A celebration of life will be scheduled on a warm Spring afternoon in Cold Spring Harbor at high tide, with fair breezes, and an anchorage full of boats. May” in the comments section of the website or on the memo section of a physical check. About The WaterFront Center, Oyster Bay In the late 1980s, a real estate development proposal threatened the former Jakobson Shipyard on the shoreline of Oyster Bay. Concerned about the impact this development would have on Oyster Bay Harbor, Friends of the Bay, a not-for-profit group, the late State Senator Ralph Marino, former State Senator Carl Marcellino, and other elected officials lead a campaign that brought the community together against that proposal and came up with 6 proposals. Of those 6, Plan D was chosen; Plan D was the development of a Community Environmental and Marine Education Center. The plan was approved in 1998 and then in 2000, The WaterFront Center was established. The WaterFront Center (WFC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Oyster Bay, New York. We provide access to the waters of Oyster Bay Harbor and Long Island Sound through our marine education programs, recreational and instructional sailing programs, paddleboard, kayak, and sailboat rentals, and through harbor tours aboard our National Historic Landmark oyster sloop CHRISTEEN.</image:caption>

There are currently 78 SDF-trained Canine Disaster Search Teams located in Baja California, California, Florida, Nebraska, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, and Virginia. Thanks to mutual aid agreements between counties, cities and states, these precious, life-saving resources can be deployed regionally and nationally to make sure that when disaster strikes, no one is left behind. From Rescued to Rescuer SDF recruits dogs from across the country that are rescued from abuse or abandonment. Typically these dogs demonstrate high energy, tenacity and boldness, making them ideal for search and rescue, but unsuitable for a family pet. After passing stringent screening and testing criteria, the dogs are then trained to harness that high energy, drive and tenacity into life-saving skills. Pre-Trained Canines When the dogs are ready (and not before), they receive eight to ten months of professional training before being teamed with a handler. Since the dog comes to the handler completely trained, the time it takes for the handler/dog search team to attain FEMA Advanced Certification is significantly reduced. A process that often took two or more years now takes 8 to 12 months. Success Rates SDF’s extensive pre-screening of canine candidates and rigorous training have produced a winning combination. Before SDF introduced its program, only about 15% of the dogs that trained to be search dogs became certified. SDF boosted this to 85%. Firefighters: A Search Dog’s Best Friend SDF chooses the best possible partners for our dogs: firefighters and other first-responders. Why? Because these are the men and women professionally trained to handle the chaos, danger and trauma associated with disaster situations. Also, they know that a skilled search dog is the most valuable tool in their search arsenal, and have the commitment to keep that tool honed. Ongoing Support to Handlers SDF stays in close touch with the handlers long after they are partnered with an SDF search dog, providing ongoing training up to and beyond Advanced Certification. Lifetime Care Commitment SDF makes a Lifetime Care Commitment to each dog: once rescued, it will never need to be rescued again. If a dog is accepted by SDF but does not complete the training program, or if it cannot remain with its handler for any reason, it is placed in a loving Lifetime Care home. No Cost to Fire Departments It costs SDF $50,000 to recruit, care for, and train each dog, partner it with a firefighter-handler, and provide ongoing training to the team. SDF provides these dogs at no cost to fire departments and other disaster response agencies. No Government Funding SDF is a small, efficiently run not-for-profit agency with no government funding. We rely on our supporters to help rescue these dogs and turn them into rescuers.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Legacy - St. Francis Hospital - Nursing Education + Leadership Endowment, Roslyn</image:title>
<image:caption>St. Francis Hospital - Endowment for Nursing Leadership and Education, Roslyn, NY Over the years, the healthcare workers at St. Francis Hospital have cared for Doug with professionalism, kindness and expertise. In 2022, St. Francis will activate the first cohort of nurses, who will be selected to enroll in advanced degree programs while maintaining their roles at St. Francis. The St. Francis Hospital giving page for the Nursing Endowment can be found at https://www.chsli.org/st-francis-hospital/nursing-education-fund with an option to donate in memory of someone. Checks can be written to St. Francis Hospital Foundation with a memo noting: nursing endowment/Douglas May. Mailing Address: St. Francis Hospital Foundation 100 Port Washington Blvd. Roslyn, NY 11576 ABOUT THE ENDOWMENT FOR NURSING LEADERSHIP AND EDUCATION As you know, the quality of nursing care creates a ripple effect throughout any healthcare organization. It defines the culture and most certainly impacts the confidence and satisfaction of patients and their loved ones. At St. Francis Hospital, we are proud to have a strong tradition of nursing care that distinguishes the hospital both regionally and nationally. For this reason, St. Francis Hospital is considered a model for patient-centered care. To support this level of excellence, St. Francis Hospital promotes continuing education at all levels of nursing practice. Our efforts have helped sustain a culture of caring established by the Founding Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary nearly 100 years ago. In reflecting on the challenges of 2020, we were inspired to take our commitment another step forward. We want to ensure that our nursing staff feel personally supported and encouraged in their career choice and advancement. To this end, the St. Francis Hospital Foundation Board approved the creation of a new endowment for nursing leadership and education. These funds will be directed to ensure that St. Francis Hospital has the dedicated resources to invest in its nursing staff. The endowment will be a permanent source of funding for training, mentorship programs and advanced educational pursuits for nursing staff at all levels. St. Francis Hospital’s efforts align with a national focus on elevating the level of education for nurses, and preparing nurse leaders at the doctoral level. The next generation of nurse leaders will be expected to demonstrate new levels of expertise related to connecting patients with complementary health care services, such as telehealth and home care. They will also be collaborative partners in moving our population toward health equity, by adapting their roles to consider social determinants of health. In addition, we seek to support innovation around the delivery of patient care by preparing nurses for a role in research, specifically related to the use of artificial intelligence and emerging information technology platforms that will enhance the care process and patient outcomes. The first steps have already been taken at St. Francis. At each level, beginning with entry-level nursing assistants to our more senior nursing staff, we have mapped specific paths to developing talent and leadership. The new endowment for nursing leadership and education will help us achieve the following: 1) Support master’s degree preparation for select nurse leaders with BSN degrees 2) Support current nurse leaders in pursuing doctoral degrees 3) Enhance succession plans for nurse leadership by promoting exposure of staff and assistant nurse managers to leadership roles 4) Support advanced practice RNs in the pursuit of doctor of nursing practice (DNP) which will further educational and clinical specialty development at St. Francis Hospital 5) Utilize nurses with bachelor’s degrees who are on track to receive Nurse Practitioner (NP) degrees within service areas such as the Emergency Department, critical care units and physicians’ offices, to promote staff education and innovation 6) Collaborate with local academic nurse leaders to create flexible degree programs at Molloy College and Adelphi University to facilitate degree completion 7) Work with nursing colleges in the area to provide certificate programs that address needs related to education, management, surgical assistance, and innovative research In 2022, we will activate the first cohort of nurses, who will be selected to enroll in advanced degree programs while maintaining their roles at St. Francis. Their tuition expenses and dedicated time for educational activities will be funded by the endowment. We are grateful for your consideration of a gift to recognize St. Francis Hospital’s finest – our nursing team – in loving memory of Douglas May. Your support will advance training opportunities, prepare nurses to take on leadership roles, and expand opportunities for nursing research on patient safety and the delivery of care.</image:caption>
